I know it’s a crazy idea but stick with me to hear my rationale. This week I have a respiratory virus, aka the common cold, which has sidelined me for several days. How could I possibly feel there’s a benefit so poorly and out of balance?

Being sick enough to make the couch my home base with boxes of tissues caused me to pause and listen to my body frequently. My body sent messages of what to eat and drink and when to rest. I listened and consumed bone broth, scrambled eggs, and ginger ale for 3-4 days.

Listening to My Body

The virus zapped my energy and slowed me down enough to really listen to my body. Listening this intently felt simultaneously strange and wonderful. In a normal day, my pace is too fast to ask my body what it needs and then listen for the answer. While sick, my mind and body felt strongly connected and I liked it!

Since recovering, have I been able to maintain a strengthened mind-body connection? Good question! Because the pace of my life resumed, the connection has not been as strong. This realization makes me feel sad. I know my body deserves my undivided attention at least once a day. I need to slow down to listen to my body’s wisdom.

How strong is your mind-body connection? On a scale of 1 to 10 (ten being high), how would you rate your balance between the two?

Prescriptions for Strengthening Our Mind-Body Connection

In an article on The Chopra Center website, the authors write “when we’re in an optimal state of dynamic mind-body balance, we naturally tend to listen to our body with love and reverence and make choices that support balance, happiness, and wellbeing.” They list seven mind-body prescriptions to help create this positive feedback loop:

  1. Take time each day to quiet your mind and meditate.
  2. Each day eat a healthy diet that includes a wide variety of colorful fruits and vegetables.
  3. Move your body: engage in daily exercise.
  4. Take time for restful sleep.
  5. Release emotions that aren’t serving you.
  6. Cultivate loving relationships.
  7. Enjoy a good belly-laugh at least once a day.

I’m doing pretty well on most of these prescriptions. That said, I’ve got room to grow in quieting my mind and meditating. For the next two weeks, I’m going to experiment with quieting my mind and listening to my body’s messages. I’ll let you know what I discover.
