Do you remember the excitement of going to the playground as a child? During recess in elementary school, the class would disperse with everyone running to their most favorite game or activity. I remember being addicted to tetherball in the fourth grade hoping to beat Camille. She was taller than I was and therefore had the advantage needed to win most times we played.
Maybe you can picture taking your own kids or nieces and nephews to the neighborhood playground. The kids are like a dropped bag of marbles on the floor running as fast as they can to their most favorite piece of equipment. The slide was easy, but the monkey bars required more skill and strength. No matter what, however, it was all fun. The energy and happiness were palpable.
Like a Playground
Every once in a while when I’m at the gym and looking around to see what others are doing while I’m using a cardio machine, I’m struck by the similarities between the gym and a playground. There are so many things to try – maybe a machine or specific bodyweight exercise.
Twice in the past few days, I saw women using medicine balls. One of them threw the ball high against a wall and did a deep squat when catching the ball. It looked fun to me. Another woman bounced a medicine ball on the floor and extended it over her head after it rebounded. This looked fun to me too.
On the way home, I thought about how the gym is my adult playground. There is always something new to try or learn. My body appreciates using different muscles including my brain as I work to learn a new skill. If I need to refresh my workout because it feels a little stale, all I need to do is look around and see what others are doing.
Flip the script in your mind from dreading the gym to looking at it as a boost of fun. What’s important is being open to new ways to increase your fitness so that all of your muscles are strengthened and you are excited to try new challenges appropriate for your fitness level that puts a smile on your face. Have some fun on your adult playground!
